Graceless

Wayne Stinnett is a bit of a hero of mine. He was the reason I started to write action thrillers. I also read his book on writing within the Amazon domain and gained a lot of insight from it.
Wayne manages to churn out books much faster than I can, he is prolific in his writing career and the majority of the books hold an excellent story.
Graceless is a collaboration between Wayne Stinnett, John H Cunningham, Nick Sullivan, and Nicholas Harvey. I’ve read books from each of these authors. They seem to be the “Rat Pack” of the Florida Keys if any of you can remember who the “Rat Pack” were!
With authors of this quality, Graceless was guaranteed to be a good beach read. And that is exactly what it was. Excellent for a bit of escapism into the islands surrounding the southern part of Florida. The story weaves its way around an elusive lost treasure that Jesse and his family get entangled with as the story unfolds.
The authors work well as a group tying the storyline together and intertwining it with Jesse’s stepdaughter’s wedding. The use of the event was an excellent way to draw me into the storyline. As with all Jesse McDermit books they are not overflowing with action and adventure. The story is more like life takes over and the action sort of fits in. Graceless leads us along a merry path that involves a considerable number of characters from older books as they all strive to ensure the wedding is a success.
I am not sure if Wayne has been writing in the first person for maybe a bit too long. He seems to have made Jesse and the other main characters almost invincible. In the older books, Jesse would make the odd mistake and not always think of every eventuality and have a plan in place to deal with it. I also felt the fight on the beach could have been set up better and then choreographed in a more natural way. In my opinion, it was a also very clumsy way to introduce a very important part of the plot. My last complaint is how they found the first gold ingot, this in my opinion could have been handled better.
The characters in my William Brody Action Thriller series always have faults, as I believe they are more human and lovable if they can’t deal with every single thing that comes along. Overall, Graceless is an enjoyable amble through the tropics. I would have preferred a little more development of the storyline especially around the lost gold. It all seemed a little vague and haphazard with little plot development to drag me as the reader into the story. It almost felt like this was the beginning of another series and we were being led into a larger story that would unfold as the books come out.
