Track Down Africa
Author: Scott Conrad.
I enjoyed Track Down Africa as it was light and a very easy read. I can see why other readers have downloaded the book and enjoyed it. This is the type of story that you can take on holiday with you and it will not bog you down as you enjoy your trip. I read it in two sittings as it is a fast read so if you are away for a while and wanted Track Down Africa to be your holiday book make sure you have a few more on hand!
Brad Jacobs is a lone wolf, a gun for hire on his way back from a tough assignment. Before he even leaves the airport for his flat the proverbial has hit the fan and he is off on his next adventure. But this time he has to travel to the depths of Africa. I write fiction based in Africa, so I will always pick a book with Africa in the title!
Brad has no time to lose as he is tasked with rescuing a family member from the evil warlords of the Congo. Brad and his team manage to get themselves organized and head for the jungle and a fast-paced action action-filled adventure.
I enjoyed the story as it did not bog me down in lengthy discussions on the type of weapon to carry and the Caliber of the bullets etc. I find this is an easy way for an author to fill a few paragraphs and it does not add to the story; unless you are Jack Reacher.
The four-man team that heads to the jungles of the Congo are your normal special forces recon types big, mean, and dangerous but with a heart of gold. Scott, the author, only really fleshes out the two main characters Brad and Ving as the other two guys are there to carry the gear.
Ving, a massive African American soldier who loves his family, is a deadly killer, and also enjoys bacon sandwiches, is the de facto second in command and also has all of the contacts. They manage to hitch a ride to the Congo and immediately there is action keeping the reader turning the pages. Brad and Ving get into loads of exciting scrapes. The action is continuous and exciting keeping the reader on their toes.
I was slightly taken aback when the team entered a small village deep in the jungles of Ubanji after traveling along a river for several hours. They then proceed to what seems to be a diner and order bacon sandwiches. I was enjoying the story up until that moment then when I had finished the book that is the lasting memory for me. I have lived in Africa for many years and traveled all over Sub-Saharan East and Central Africa, and I can categorically state that finding a bacon sandwich anywhere is tough. In the centre of Kinshasa in a five-star hotel, I have had a problem with anything other than African food! Also, pigs are just not that common in Africa. You know when you hit a sentence in a book, and it sticks with you. Then as you continue through the book that thought always pops, up this is what happened with me and Ving’s bacon sandwich!
However, bacon sandwiches aside Track Down Africa is a great start to a series with loads of fun action and adventure. The baddies are bad to the core and the goodies are exactly what you are expecting. This is a fast-paced action thriller with a good storyline and some unexpected twists and turns that keep you interested and reading.
I will definitely read more in the series.
