The Nazi Skull: A Bone Guard Adventure

Author: E. Chris Ambrose

A vandal breaks into the local tribal center on the reservation and beats an old Indian Chief. He seems hell-bent on destroying the past age’s culture and relics. A man is found in the desert half-beaten to death with an ancient bone in his stomach. Will he survive to tell his story? There is more to this than meets the eye!

Grant flies in when he hears the news about his estranged grandfather. He fears the worst when he finds his grandfather’s secret relic stash broken into and stolen. Grant unwillingly gets involved and soon finds out he is chasing more than he bargained for.

As the story unfolds, Grant is drawn into a web of deceit and lies as he wrangles with a white supremacist group and a covert Nazi eugenics millionaire bent on recreating the super race. Grant is out of his depth and needs help, but his team is far from Arizona.

From a shootout in a B29 graveyard to a map of the stars and ancient pictograms, Grant has to figure out what everyone is willing to kill for.

Grant is led out into the barren Arizona desert, where a rogue border militia has bizarre and cruel admission rituals. He barely escapes, only to discover he is searching for the Peking Man, a lost skeleton from the Second World War. Grant has to decipher the clues from a group of submariners held in Arizona. Then, he heads off to the Caribbean, where he almost loses his life.

The Nazi Skull cleverly takes a true story and weaves it into this exciting thriller. Grant is a believable character that gets more wrong than right as he chases down the criminals, Nazis, and an elusive eugenics dreamer. The story is well thought out and holds onto the truth as much as possible while keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. I think that Chris Ambrose, the author, could have built up his characters more, as they sometimes seem a bit flimsy. I always wonder how we suddenly got so many superhumans in one place. A bit of eugenics, maybe! But controlling a thriller and keeping it on pace and exciting is difficult. Ambrose kept me interested and willing to flick to the next page and look for where the story would head.

The baddies were evil and almost won the day, which is the mark of a good thriller. Ambrose also introduced some exciting characters that allowed Grant, the main protagonist, to develop and grow as we learned more about his history.

Overall, The Nazi Skull was an excellent quick read; I think it could have been longer and kept me entertained throughout. The descriptions of Arizona and the border were very interesting for me as I am from the UK and know nothing about this part of the world. I am, however, a diver and think Chris should have sought more advice on the diving scenes, as they could have been much better with a little more description.
